Byron Crawford: This Santa brings bikes

Byron Crawford: This Santa brings bikes
I loved this article. This retired Louisville-area farmer has rehabbed thousands of used bikes to be donated to underprivileged kids.

My company, Humana, is building a bike-based program called Freewheelin, and I would love to see if we might be able to incorporate a program like this nationwide. If we could train some of our 22,000 associates around the company to rehab bikes, or engage them in distributing them through inner city schools, it would be fantastic. What a great way to get kids off of the couch and out exercising!

  1. Greg,
We actually have a small-scale not-for-profit agency that is performing a similar service in Bloomington. It is called the Bloomington Bike Project. They get bikes donated and young philanthropic individuals volunteer their time to fix those bikes and either sell them or give them away to other people that donate time to repair bikes. It is a really neat concept. I will tell you about it in more detail later some time.

  2. That is excellent. I wonder how many communities are doing this, and whether they might be able to benefit from networking together? Hmmmm.
